We open with Jamie’s POV which I think is excellent. Jamie wakes up that day having no idea that Claire is about to waltz back into his life. It’s good being able to see what he does now in Edinburgh. The scene opens with *GASP* another woman suggestively tieing his uhh tie? I know they’re called a different name but I’m not sure what! The way this lady looks at Jamie definitely gives me “I want you vibes”. Back off lady. Claire is about to make her return!
We then see Jamie walking throughout Edinburgh, making his way to the Print shop. Seems like he’s made quite a life for himself.
So Jamie makes it to his shop and we meet 2 new characters, Lesley and Hayes. Not entirely new characters as they call Jamie “Mac Dubh” which was his name in Ardsmuir prison so I assume they were Jamie’s inmates. It appears Jamie has hired them to distribute seditious pamphlets that Jamie is printing on the side. Are they trying to make these guys the new Angus and Rupert? No one will be able to replace my beloved Angus & Rupert *heart breaks*
The next new character we are introduced to is Geordie who appears to be Jamie’s assistant. Geordie has quite the attitude to him, he clearly disapproves of Lesley & Hayes, quite snarky words are exchanged between the three. Jamie sends off Lesley & Hayes and asks if Geordie can go get some ash to which Geordie complains.
We next have a lovely montage of Jamie using the printing presses. Apparently these presses where built from scratch and where actually in true working order to which Sam Heughan was trained on how to use. All of the printed paper you see around the shop, Sam actually printed.
Now….we come to Claire’s arrival! Which is pretty much exactly how it played out at the end of the last episode, just from Jamie’s POV.
Can we just take a moment to talk about the title card! Ahhhh so cool!! LOVED how they had Jamie printing the page and when he lifts it, it reveals the writers name, Matthew B. Roberts.
It’s a little awkward meeting as when Jamie comes to after fainting he realises that he spilt his cup of ale all over his pants. He goes to remove them but then stops and asks Claire if she could turn around. Fair enough, they have been apart 20 years so it’s kind like them meeting for the first time but Claire’s like “nah we’re still married, all good” and Jamie’s like “ok”. I personally think it would have suited the story line better if she would have turned around.
And then they embrace and have the most epic, romantic embrace/kiss/exchange of words. At that moment, there wasn’t a single Outlander fan who wasn’t doing the ugly Kim K cry. I know I was.If have to mention Bear McCreary’s score….my goodness that man knows how to compose!! Give me the season 3 soundtrack NOW!
And then Geordie ruins the moment by walking in on them stating he will not work for an immoral papist who has orgies in the shop! And it’s not even noon! Calm your farm mate. He walks out, good riddance.
Jamie takes Claire into the back of his shop so he can put on another pair of pants. Now this part kinda surprised me. Jamie asks about their child and Claire whips out photographs. I thought she might bring a drawing of Brianna rather than photos because if she gets caught with them, back to the thieves hole she goes! Anyway, Jamie checks out the photos, he comes to one where Brianna is wearing a bikini and Jamie acts like his eyes have been burnt haha! Afterwards Jamie, tells Claire about his son Willie. He tells her a little about how he came to be but he neglects to tell her that he was BLACKMAILED into sleeping with Willie’s mother! Man that annoyed me! Kinda an important fact yeah?
Claire tells Jamie that Frank has died and that he took her back when she went back through the stones. Jamie asks if she was happy with him. She replies that she was happy raising Brianna with him. Good answer. The clock tower rings and Jamie remembers he must go to the tavern.
On their way to the tavern, they run into Fergus! Grown up Fergus! I’ll miss the younger actor. Fergus tells Claire how he lost his hand, he has a wooden hand now. Fergus pulls Jamie aside to tell him Willoughby is in trouble. So Jamie has to see Ned Gowan (yay! he’s still alive!) to advise him on something now that Claires back hmmmmm.
They head to the tavern and he meet Willoughby having a disagreement with a prostitute, Jamie settles it. Claire sits with Willoughby as Jamie settles something out the back. The Englishman Jamie meets in the back is quite a shady character. Jamie gives him some money. Looks like Jamie is selling something a little illegal haha!
Willoughby looks like a cool guy, another fella Jamie has saved from death.
So um…the next place they go seems to be a brothel. lol. We see the same lady from the beginning of the episode. Her name is Madam Jeanne and she appears to run the brothel. She seems like surprised/disgusted to see Jamie with a lady. See! Clearly she’s crushing on Jamie hard. Jamie asks if his room is ready….umm SORRY? HE LIVES IN A BROTHEL? Jamie.
So they make it to their room, dodging prostitutes and “guests” along the way. Poor Claire, she looks so uncomfortable, especially when the walls are made of paper and you can clearly hear whats happening in the next room. Claire has a look on her face like “what the heck have I stepped into?!”. Jamie sees maybe he shouldn’t have brought her here. Well duh. Claires like “why do you have a room in a brothel? Are you such a good customer?”. Jamie tells her that Madam Jeanne is a customer of his. Free room. Still doesn’t make it right Jamie!
Jamie wants to know if Claire has come back to stay or just say hello and leave again. Clearly she has come back to stay but all of this is very shocking to her! She says she understands he’d have another life now but Jamie is like, hold up, “do you not know I’ve burned for you so long?” *heart melts* but then adds on that he is a different man now and they know each other less now then when they first wed. He doesn’t want Claire to go but he must know if she wants him which of course she’s like “HECK YES”.
So now they have dinner. I have a problem with this scene as I would have loved to hear them telling each other about the 20 years apart and what all happened. Instead we got a voiceover from Claire and lots of longing looks. Que the start of about 3 or 4 love making scenes in this episode. The first mirrors the wedding episode quite nicely, I really liked that. They were also awkward and shy with each other, which is realistic considering it’s been 20 years. Just gotta say, Jamie’s back scars look way to fresh. I know a lot of other people have had that issue too.
Afterwards, Claire is trying to guess what Jamie does for a living, other than the print shop. He reveals he prints seditious pamphlets and smuggles whiskey and different liquors into Scotland. Que love making session #2!
Claire spots the scar that Black Jack Randall gave him at Culloden. Feeling guilty, Claire stats she will never leave him again but Jamie says it’s ok, she did it for Brianna. She asks if Jamie fell in love with anyone else after she left to which Jamie replies no. Oh and look, it’s love making session #3.
In the morning, Jamie gets ready to head to work. He asks Claire to stay in the room until he returns. This is code for “Claire is going to leave the room and get herself in trouble”.
There’s a knock at the door and look! It’s Young Ian! Jenny and Ian’s son! I like this kid. Claire enlightens him that she’s the long lost Aunt, that apparently to all the village folk, went to be with the fairies and Ian is all “cool”. And off he goes.
Claire decides to go down stairs for some breaky and joins the prostitutes. All of the prostitutes assume she is the new recruit, commenting that she’s a little older than Madam Jeanne likes but she’ll do fine as she has “clear skin and nice bubbies”. UM WHAT. BUBBIES. But wait, it doesn’t stop there. The first girl introduces her self. Her name is Dorcas. DORCAS. They proceed to tell Claire how to look after herself like “soaking her parts in warm water” omgosh I think I was blushing along with Claire! The whole conversation with the girls is quite hilarious. Then Madam Jeanne comes along and ruins everything! Hates the fact that Claire is chatting with her girls. Madam Jeanne is like “get out of my sight lady” and sends Claire back up to her room.
When Claire gets back to her room she discovers quite a nasty fellow ransacking Jamie’s room look for his ledgers. Claire’s like “get out” he’s like “nope” and threatens to rape Claire. We don’t need anymore rape in Outlander. Especially if it’s not even in the book, which apparently in this scene, it was not.
KILT RATING & GBG (Good, bad, Great)
So I was so sure I was going to give this episode a 5 kilt rating but I can’t. There were many things I loved about this episode and a few things I didn’t like (which I will get into in my GBG). For it to be a 5, I would need to love everything.
GOOD – Claire’s chat over breakfast with the prostitutes. Gosh that was hilarious.
BAD – Not enough talking between Claire & Jamie. I wanted to hear them tell each about what happened to them in the 20 years apart. Also the threaten of rape at the end was unnecessary.
GREAT – Claire & Jamie’s first embrace/kiss at the print shop <3 The tenderness, the shyness, the music, the lighting. That scene along was a 5/5.
